Sucker Punch (2011)

Sucker Punch has an interesting concept, set in the 1960s, a young lady's mother has died and her stepfather has forced her into a mental institute.  She is destined to be lobotomized within five days so she tries to find a way to escape, both physically and mentally.  Her escape plan is fantasized with her now being in a sex enslavement brothel, meeting up with four other girls and planning their escape from there.  She must obtain four objects to escape:  knife, map, fire and key.  Each piece is further fantasized into massive battles.  It is these fantasy sequences where all the action takes place and the film ends up become very exaggerated.  The later action sequences are more fun but each is visually interesting, however the film as a whole is bland and lacks motivation.  It is surprising at how disengaged you can be even when there are swords slicing robots or rapid machine gun fire onscreen.  The film also suffers from a long length which seems bloated, a faster paced storyline would have been better.  Overall, Sucker Punch is conceptually good but the execution is lacking.
