Toy Review: Transformers Generations Combiner Wars Bonecrusher

Review:  #252
Name:  Bonecrusher
Brand:  Transformers
Allegiance:  Autobot
Line:  Generations - Combiner Wars
Year of Release:  2015
Size Class:  Voyager
Variations:  SDCC has more paint applications; TakaraTomy version has more paint applications and remolded knees

VEHICLE MODE:

Bonecrusher transforms into a mostly green bulldozer.  He rolls using a big cylinder wheel along with two smaller ones.

This is a good bulldozer in terms of sculpting.  However, he is lacking in paint... seriously.  He barely has anything to break up the lump of green and this makes him very bland and the worse of the Constructicons (although G1 accurate).

As mentioned, there are some fantastic sculpted detailing here, it just needs some paint to highlight it.  The machinery in the treads, in particular, need the extra paint like the SDCC or Japanese version.

The shovel can tilt up but it is for transformation.  Otherwise, he has no other play value and it is impressive at how well this vehicle mode hides the robot and combiner kibble.

Bonecrusher is a Voyager classed figure and he it just a tinier bit smaller than Motormaster but makes up for it with the heftiness of the figure, plus the vehicle holds together well.

A quick comparison with Masterpiece Bumblebee and Bonecrusher looks quite nice and right at home.

Needless to say he looks great with the rest of the Constructicons too.

A good vehicle mode, in terms of sculpting anyway.  Bonecrusher has just a bit too much green to pass for a premium product.

TRANSFORMATION:

Transformation is simple and intuitive.  The interesting part is the way the arms fold out and the torso collapse.  It was also quite ingenious at how the combiner forearm is out of the way in both modes and hides quite well.  If you didn't know he formed an arm then the extra piece wouldn't really look out of place that much.  One problem is trying to peg his crotch together, it either takes a lot of effort to snap it into place or it just doesn't work.  It's an apparent design flaw that could have been designed better.

ROBOT MODE:

Bonecrusher's robot mode... remains very green and devoid of paint.  On the brighter side, it is very G1 accurate.

He doesn't have much obvious kibble, he has the combiner forearm as a backpack and the bulldozer cabin flipped up behind his head.  While it is G1 toy-accurate, you would have hoped that it could have folded back more to be out of sight.

Like the rest of the set, the head sculpt is fantastic.  It is situated on a balljoint, complete with lavish silver paint and red eyes.

He has some slight proportion issues caused by using the shovel as his chest, it makes it too wide and large and overwhelms the rest of the figure.

Placing him next to some contemporary toys, you can see that Bonecrusher is somewhat simplified for a figure of his size.  He is chunkier and the proportions just that tiny bit off.

Some people are going to use him as a Masterpiece stand-in and he works to a degree.

Poseability is one area that he is not compromised on.  He features the full set of joints barring a waist swivel.

His feet are large and he is super stable in nearly all poses.  Unfortunately, his crotch pieces like to unclip when you're trying to pose him.

Bonecrusher, along with Scavenger, were the only members with stock photos showing their weapons.  In this case, a handheld missile pod.

A handle flips out allowing Bonecrusher to hold it (the missile pod is the combined mode's forearm and hand).

While the weapon is bulky, it is not heavy allowing Bonecrusher to wield it however he wants.

Once again, the consistent theme of the Constructicons makes them one of the better combiners in the Combiner Wars line.

A good robot mode hampered by the block of greenness, some proportion issues and occasional unclipping of the crotch.

OVERALL:

Factoring that he has to combine, Bonecrusher is a decent toy.  However, I wouldn't go so far as to call him a good toy and in my opinion, he is the weakest in the Devastator set.  Nonetheless, he is still a fun figure and impressive once you have him in hand.
